54 Columns
About this Location
If you’ve ever been cruising through Old Fourth Ward and noticed those concrete columns sitting in the grass at Glen Iris and North Highland, that’s 54 Columns by Sol LeWitt. LeWitt was known for keeping things minimal and letting structure do the talking, and that’s exactly what this piece does. It doesn’t try too hard or feel overdesigned, it’s just a clean grid of concrete forms that somehow turns into a full experience once you walk through it. It feels intentional without being loud, which is honestly what makes it fit so well in that part of Atlanta.
From a photography standpoint, this spot is all about simplicity doing the heavy lifting. You don’t need much, just a subject and a little awareness of your angles. The columns naturally create leading lines, framing, and depth without you having to force anything. Golden hour is the move here, the light cuts through the gaps and throws long shadows that instantly add drama and texture to your shots. It’s one of those places where you can show up with no plan and still walk away with something solid, which is why I keep coming back to it.
