On High Sculpture
About this Location
Rising like a massive industrial skeleton against the New Haven skyline, "On High" is a masterclass in Abstract Expressionist sculpture. Created in 1979 by legendary artist Alexander Liberman, this towering 30-foot installation is constructed from painted steel cylinders and beams that lean and interlock with a sense of precarious grace.
Located directly in front of the Federal Building on Court Street, the sculpture’s "International Orange" (or "Liberman Red") finish provides a startling, high-saturation contrast to the surrounding brutalist concrete and glass architecture. For photographers, this isn't just a statue; it’s a study in leading lines, negative space, and forced perspective. The way the light hits the cylindrical pipes creates deep, dramatic shadows that shift throughout the day, making it an ideal spot for "Noir" style urban photography.
