Steel Columns Sculpture
About this Location
The Steel Columns sculpture on the Eastside BeltLine (officially titled 54 Columns) serves as a stark, minimalist tribute to the Atlanta skyline. Created by world-renowned artist Sol LeWitt, these 54 concrete and steel pillars range from 10 to 20 feet in height, deliberately arranged to mimic the irregular rise and fall of the city’s urban core. Situated in the Old Fourth Ward, the installation strips away the glass and steel of modern architecture to focus entirely on the raw, industrial geometry that defines the city’s skeletal structure.
For photographers, this site is a masterclass in light, shadow, and perspective. Depending on the time of day, the columns transform from a uniform "industrial forest" into a complex playground of high-contrast silhouettes that stretch across the grassy field. Whether you are using the pillars to create a repetitive geometric frame for a portrait or timing the sun to catch the hard-edged shadows against the gray concrete, the sculpture offers a versatile, "weather-locked" experience that rewards those who understand the technical relationship between the sun’s angle and structural form.
