The Legacy of Black Photographers
As we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to acknowledge the significant contributions of Black photographers to the world of photography. From capturing powerful moments in history to highlighting the beauty and diversity of the Black community, Black photographers have played a crucial role in shaping the medium and its impact on society. This month, we honor their legacy and the journey of one Black photographer who is continuing their legacy today….me!
From Jump Shots to Head Shots
I began my journey as a dedicated and hard-working collegiate basketball player for Southern Connecticut State University Owls in the Northeast Conference. The skills I developed as an athlete, such as dedication, hard-work, and leadership, prepared me well for the challenges of the business world. My journey as a photographer really began in 2009 when I switched my major in college to Communications with a Minor in Video Production.
A Peak Behind the Hollywood Curtain
This was a major turning point in my life and led to two major breakthroughs. The first was taking a photography class and discovering my love for the art. The second was taking an internship at NBC Universal’s “Maury Show”, a popular daytime talk show. This experience not only sparked my love for photography, but it also ignited my entrepreneurial spirit.
Shifting from Student to Entrepreneur
After graduation, I moved to Atlanta in search of opportunities in my field. On a visit to Lenox Mall, I stumbled upon Wolf Camera, where I was able to gain employment as a Print Specialist and later on a Camera Sales Associate. During my time there, I was able to learn about the industry, camera equipment and printers, while also being able to meet my first business mentor and best friend, Gregory Harris, who was a corporate accountant and Band Manager at the time.
Building My Photo Businesses
Gregory managed a band and a DJ at the time, and I accompanied him to one of their shows at the famous Smith’s Olde Bar in Midtown Atlanta. Watching him manage his business with patience and integrity really stuck with me throughout my years in entrepreneurship. He continued to mentor and give me valuable life skills both as a growing business man and a growing Black Man.
Gaining Live Event Photography Experience
Together, we continued to cover hundreds of events in the Atlanta market and secured long-term contracts, further developing my skills as a photographer and videographer. Some of the major events we covered during this time were Praise 102.5’s Praise in the Park at the Centennial Olympic Park, the Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park, and the A3C Festival held at the Masquerade.
Photo Walking The Atlanta Landscape
When we were not working, we often went on photo-walks, searching and finding great locations to capture. These unforgettable times are what led to the creation of Take Pics Here, a photo location directory that not only helps photographers find amazing locations to capture but also promotes exploration through photo-walks and virtual photo workshops.
Sadly, Gregory passed away in 2014 and I miss his friendship and mentorship daily. However, I apply the knowledge and continue to use the principles I learned from him daily as I navigate the growth and development of my businesses.
The Birth of LongShots Media
With my experience and passion for photography, I went on to found LongShots Media, a media production company that helps entrepreneurs and businesses enhance their digital footprint and connect with their target audience through high-quality media content.
Continuing the Legacy
In addition to running my businesses, I am also the Head of Video Marketing and Photography for the Atlanta REALTORS® Association and the Atlanta Commercial Board of REALTORS®. The Atlanta REALTORS® Association was established in 1911 and is a professional trade association for real estate brokers and salespeople.
Atlanta Commercial Board of REALTORS® is a member organization that focuses on commercial real estate and was established in 1967. These roles have allowed me to bring my passion for photography and expertise in marketing to the forefront and help businesses and organizations enhance their visual storytelling and connect with their audience.
Living Black History
Black History Month is an important time to reflect on the contributions and achievements of Black individuals in all areas of society. In the world of photography, Black photographers have made a significant impact and helped shape the industry in many ways. From capturing important moments in history to creating powerful images that shed light on social issues, Black photographers have been at the forefront of using the art form to tell stories and create change.
Forging My Own Path
My own journey as a Black photographer is just one example of the incredible talent and dedication that exists within the community. From my early days as a dedicated collegiate basketball player to my current role as a business owner, professional photographer, and Head of Video Marketing and Photography for two respected real estate organizations, my journey has been one of growth, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
Conclusion
I am proud of my accomplishments and the impact I have made in the photography industry and beyond, and I look forward to continuing to make a difference through my work. As we celebrate Black History Month, I encourage others to reflect on the contributions of Black photographers and the important role they play in shaping our world through their art.
