Emerging as a testament to Atlanta’s enduring spirit and captivating history, the “Birth of Atlanta” art installation has undergone a remarkable journey, restored and relocated through the support of Renew Atlanta. Now taking its prominent place within the scenic embrace of Westside Park, this monumental sculpture not only reflects Atlanta’s past but invites photographers to capture its powerful narrative in a new light. Originally gracing the skyline above Heritage Row in Underground Atlanta, where Central Avenue and Alabama Street converge, its revival marks a poignant step forward.

Behind its awe-inspiring form lies a collaboration of visionary minds. The architectural design prowess of Lord Aeck Sargent intertwined with the creative genius of artist and architect Amy Landesberg, culminating in the design for “Birth of Atlanta.” CODA’s commissioning of this artwork echoes the commemoration of the Centennial Olympic Games held in Atlanta in 1996, underscoring its significance to the city’s identity.

This striking sculpture, measuring an impressive 32 feet wide by 45 feet tall, boasts a symphony of perforated metal “feathers and wings” poised in flight. This design echoes the abstract symbolism of the Phoenix, a mythical bird that rose triumphantly from its own ashes, mirroring Atlanta’s own phoenix-like rebirth after the trials of the Civil War.

For photographers, the “Birth of Atlanta” art installation is a rich tapestry of imagery waiting to be captured. Its powerful history combined with the dynamic interplay of light and shadow provides an alluring subject. Whether emphasizing the sculpture’s intricate details or its harmonious relationship with its surroundings, photographers are presented with a canvas to tell a compelling story. As it stands, a triumphant reminder of Atlanta’s resilience, this sculpture beckons photographers to frame its symbolism and power within the artistic canvas of Westside Park.
